Counseling Services

Counseling, or therapy, is the process of meeting with a therapist to resolve problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings, relationship issues, and/or somatic responses (sensations in the body).  Beginning therapy can be a big step toward being the healthiest version of yourself and living the best life possible, no matter what challenges you may be facing. Through therapy, you can change self-destructive behaviors and habits, resolve painful feelings, improve relationships, and more.  People pursue therapy for a variety of reasons. Some may enter therapy to address major life changes and others may seek help in managing mental health conditions.  Most people who go to therapy are ordinary people struggling with common, everyday issues.

Some people seek therapy because they have identified specific goals or issues that they wish to work on.  Some may know they are struggling in areas of their life but are having a difficult time sorting things out.  Others may be encouraged by family, friends, or medical professionals to seek help. Whatever the reason, it takes courage to attend therapy, and it takes dedication to see it through.  Together, the goals of therapy will be determined and in many cases, the therapist and client will explore much more than just the presenting problem(s).  The help of the right therapist can empower self-growth, improve relationships, and reduce emotional suffering.

Treatment approaches incorporated in our work together are individualized to your presenting and ongoing needs and tend to include but are not limited to:

Strength Focused: The focus is on inherent strengths and skills that you already have and uses it as building blocks for problem solving and future success.  An approach that empowers, by drawing attention to the positives that exist within and around you.  You are not defined by your problem.  Instead, defined by your capacity for growth and change

Insight-Oriented: Understanding how your feelings, beliefs, actions and events from the past are influencing your current mindset, behavior and relationships

Solution Focused: An approach to treatment that focuses on the present and future and less on the past.  Problems are solved by looking at what is already working and how you would like your life to be, rather than focusing on the past and the origin of the problem.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): An approach that focuses on identifying, understanding, and changing thinking and behavior patterns.  Skills are learned, practiced in session and put to practice in real life

Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT): An approach that focuses on acceptance and change.  Mindfulness skills as well as skills for interpersonal effectiveness, tolerating distress and regulating emotions are incorporated into treatment

ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): An approach using strategies of acceptance and mindfulness along with commitment and behavior change, as a way to cope with unwanted thoughts, feelings and sensations.  Focus is on accepting experiences, placing them in a different context, developing greater clarity about personal values, and committing to needed behavior change

Family Systems: An approach to treatment that emphasizes the interdependency of family members rather than focusing on individuals in isolation from the family
